The Fourth of July is only a few days away which means you’ve got to get a move on if you want to host a party. If you’re deterred about hosting because of the expense, read through these 5 essentials to hosting a fun, yet frugal, Fourth of July party.

Essential 1: Invitations

Use evites, not invites, especially on short notice. Electronic invites are faster, cheaper, and will allow you to keep track of your guest list very easily as most evites offer an rsvp button option.

In addition, most programs, including evite.com, offer you a variety of designs or the ability to design your own. So you’re not missing out on much by not mailing paper invites.

Essential 2: Decorations

Just because it’s the Fourth of July doesn’t mean your entire house needs to be decked out in red, white, and blue. Place a pop of color via a small American flag, or vase on your tables. You could even make a cheap patriotic garland by cutting red, white, and blue plastic table covers into strips and tying them to a string.

Essential 3: Dinnerware

If you don’t have to purchase disposable plates, don’t. Use your dishwasher and if you don’t have enough plates, borrow some from a friend.

If you do have to, or want to, purchase dinnerware, opt for white or neutral colors. Although it may not look as fancy as you want, you’ll pay more for colored plates, silverware, and napkins and receive less per package. Plus, if you have any neutral plates leftover, you’ll be able to use them for other occasions.

Another fun way to add color is to purchase white paper tablecloths, and a few red and blue markers to keep your guests, specifically the kiddos, busy during dinner while others are finishing up.

Essential 4: Food

Choose foods that can be cooked with ease and are even easier to clean up. Hotdogs and hamburgers are always a cheap choice with minimal clean up, especially since they can be grilled, which means less mess and fewer people hovering in your kitchen.

Watermelon is a good choice for a side dish because it’s relatively cheap for the amount of food you’re getting from it. Other great options include chips, veggies, and pasta salads.

Essential 5: Entertainment

Keeping your guests entertained isn’t as hard as you may think. If you have outdoor games such as croquet, bocce ball, corn hole, or ladder ball, you’re all set. If you’re looking to add color, try making this patriotic ring toss game from old soda bottles, jute, and a fruit crate.

Keep in mind your guests probably won’t want to stay outside the whole time, so keep a few chairs in the house where people can take a moment to relax from the sun and heat.
